Viognier
The third of the three Rhone white wine grapes, Viognier can create wines of real depth and body allied to fantastic aromas of ripe fruit and exotic flowers. It has recently become very trendy and is favoured in the wine bars and restaurants of California. South America and Australia have also taken to Viognier’s seductive charms and the trend is still growing. The fact remains though, that really good, balanced and well-proportioned Viognier is very hard to get right and even France's two Viognier-only white wines (Chateau Grillet and Condrieu) are sometimes found lacking. Interestingly, one of the best uses for Viognier is as a small addition to the wines of the Cote Blonde where they add a racy seductiveness and velvety texture to old-vine Syrah. Primary fruit character: peaches and apricots Secondary fruit character: jasmine, flower blossom, spice, exotic fruits Spiritual home: Rhone Valley, France Home from home: California, Argentina, Languedoc (France)
