Tuscany
The wines of Tuscany can offer great quality and true Italian character and are among the best known, admired and internationally distributed Italian wines. They are also Wineaux's favourite Italian wines!

It's all about Sangiovese, a great red wine grape hat matches food almost like no other. The characteristic bitter cherry finish is prized and many of our best wines are from this area. Tuscany has been up and down for a wine region over the years - remember the old Chianti flasks? Not so long ago the fashion was toward heavy oaking and an international style product. A recent return to less-oaked styles with greater focus on fruit purity is welcome and the continued loyalty to the native Sangiovese grape and its various clones is paying huge dividends in terms of quality. Beware of expensive imitations though - there are many Chianti Classico's and Brunello's that are well under par for the price, but as always the good producers are turning out some stunning wines.

Finally, there are a number of great new and affordable wines from this region - Morellino di Scansano is a rising international star. The finest Brunello’s and Sangiovese’s are immediately recognisable for their burnt cherry character and are capable of great age, complexity and velvety finesse. International varieties also fair very well in many places. Look out for wines from Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti Classico, Chianti Rufina, San Gimignano and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Key grape varieties: R Sangoivese (and its various clones - Brunello for example), Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon W Chardonnay, Malvasia, Vernaccia, Sauvignon Blanc
