The Islands
The Italian islands of Sardinia and Sicily are among the largest in the Mediterranean and both have a long and distinguished history in winemaking. Sicily is traditionally one of Italy’s most productive wines regions and in recent years a spate of new winemakers are creating fantastic wines from international varieties and the very tasty local star, Nero D’Avola. Sardinia is famous for Cannonau (a relative of Grenache or Garnarcha) that produces rich, juicy, ripe reds that can be excellent in some cases. Sardinian whites include Vernaccia and some delightful Vermentino.
