Tasmania
Tassie is characterised by a cool and windy climate, not unlike Burgundy in parts, and much of the island is too cool for grape growing, suffering from extremes in temperature. This makes it one of Australia’s most unique, difficult and rewarding wine regions. Grapes that tend to work include Pinot Noir, Riesling, Chardonnay and Gewurtztraminer. While some of the grape varieties are similar to those found in other parts of Australia, the wine is often very different with a distinctive Tasmanian style. This includes elegant, medium-bodied Pinot Noir and Chardonnay which stand out against their heavier Aussie counterparts. Cabernets can be excellent but there are many 'green' examples around in lesser vintages. Tasmania also has a growing reputation for premium sparkling wines.
