The wines of South Africa
|
|
South Africa South Africa is seen as one of the leading New World wine producers but with some of the oldest soils in the world (1000 million years old) many South African winemakers will argue that they are decidedly ‘Old World’. Semantics aside, the point illustrates perfectly the pride and passion that South African’s have for their wine.
And why not – it is after all very good, with some of the best reds starting to command top dollar in world wine terms. The trend towards micro-production of high quality wine has been fuelled by the emergence of many small-scale ‘garage-style’ producers.
Quality wine production centres around, but is not the sole domain of Stellenbosch. The area produces fantastic whites from Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay and great reds from the local Pinotage (a genetic mix Pinot Noir and Cinsault) and Syrah.
Other areas like Paarl, Franschoek and Robertson are also producing good some quality wine. In the next few years these should be more available in the UK as the trend moves away from the usual mass-market, volume-driven South African brands.
Key grape varieties: R Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Grenache, Cinsault, Pinot Noir W Chenin Blanc (Steen), Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Semillon
