Sauvignon Blanc is the most well known of all the aromatic white wine varieties and these days almost a brand name all by itself. It is not difficult to see why Sauvignon Blanc is threatening to take Chardonnay’s crown with it’s upfront fruit flavour and refreshing character. And though it doesn’t have the body or stature of Chardonnay it more than makes up for it with a huge range of aromatic scents and flavours. The grape works well as a single varietal in the Loire and New Zealand or blended with Semillon in Bordeaux to create a richer, more structured dry version or the late harvest, botrysised wines of Sauternes.
Primary fruit character: gooseberries, cut grass, nettles Secondary fruit character: green beans, tinned peas, tropical fruits, asparagus, gunflint Spiritual home: Loire Valley, Bordeaux (France) Home from home: Marlborough (NZ), Chile, South Africa, Austria, Hungary
