The Romito del Romitorio has all the appeal of the best SuperTuscan blends. It has a rich, warm blackberry and plum character and with a little time in the glass provides a veritable black forest gateau on the nose. The palate is markedly different, showing intense dark fruits and layers of cedar. This is a wine of superb balance and seamless tannins with a long dry finish. Powerful but beautifully restrained with great structure, the Romito will continue to grow and develop up to 2015. Already drinking very well, but please ensure to decant long before drinking – up to 6 hours will reward drinkers with a much more expansive and complex wine.
WINEMAKER’S COMMENTS In Castello Romitorio’s “Romito,” the rebellious and the traditional are married—the boldness of Sangiovese joins the complexity of Cabernet and through the subtlety of Canaiolo emerges an exquisite harmony. In the “Super Tuscan” style, “Romito del Romitorio” is composed of sixty percent Sangiovese Grosso, twenty percent Cabernet Sauvignon and twenty percent Canaiolo, and is aged fourteen months in French tonneuax, with one additional year of bottle aging. The Romito del Romitorio is a complex wine with a dark core and brilliant ruby edge. Elegant aromas of dried rose petal, ripe red fruit and balsamic oak notes open over a backdrop of medium intense spices. The distinct and well-balanced earth notes represent a layered expression of the Montalcino “terroir”. Silky and quite velvety attack, chocolate and tar characters finish on dried fruit, juniper berry, and ripe red fruit, spices. Round full tannins, solid acidity, and a long spicy finish.
HARVEST In the 2005 vintage Nature has bestowed on the region of Montalcino a well-balanced environment; the year consisted of excellent, dry and very balanced season with naturally low-yields. Hand-picking and hand-selection of the grapes insured the highest quality.
HISTORY Sant’Antimo Rosso denomination, approved as a D.O.C. in 1996, gives winemakers in Montalcino the ability to offer wines that vary from the more rigid regulations that apply to the other denominations. Castello Romitorio’s “Romito del Romitorio” draws its unique character from the fact that it is three-fifths Sangiovese, making this Sant’Antimo a respected son of Montalcino. In fact this wine is the first wine ever bottled at the Castello Romitorio winery in 1985 and marks the beginning of our winemaking history.
