Wineaux's notes Notes from the winery Awards and testimonials

Only produced from the best vintages, this a "SuperTuscan" blend that is among the region's finest. Aged for 18 months in French oak, the bouquet is extremely complex, as is the wine itself, which has a distinctly chewy texture. Essentially a huge wine with an elegance and refinement that can only be attributed to superb wine-making. Drinking very well since 2005 and easily capable of another 10 years in the bottle.

“SuperTuscan” is the name given to wines created by master oenologists with a nod to the great Bordeaux vintages. The use of Bordeaux varietals over local grapes mean these wines do not qualify for a DOC/DOCG rating. It’s basically a very tasty two-fingered salute to the Italian wine establishment.

For those interested in such things, Robert Parker awarded the 2001 Saeculum 93 points.

VINEYARDS The 20 hectares of Riseccoli vineyards are spread across three distinctive parcels situated in the prime viticultural villages of Greve and Panzano. They are at an average altitude of 350/400 metres above sea level with optimum exposure and a broad variation in daytime and nocturnal temperatures. Yields for the Sangiovese are kept at the lowest level (40 / 45 hl/ha) in well drained soils consisting mainly of a mix of galestro and clay-like sediment.

VINIFICATION - Sangiovese: fermentation is with specially selected yeasts and maceration is 12/15 days in temperature controlled cement vats with remontages twice a day. After malolactic fermentation the Sangiovese is ready for ageing. - Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot: fermentation is with specially selected yeast, and maceration with remontages over 20 days in temperature controlled (max. 30 degrees celsius) stainless steel tanks. The wine spends 18 months in French oak (Allier) barriques of first and second remplissage, after which the best barriques are blended, lightly fined with egg whites and bottled.
