Pinot Gris

AKA: Tokay Pinot Gris, Pinot Grigio, Grauburgunder, Rulander, Szurkebarat

This variety has been a phenomenon in the UK in recent years. Unfortunately, much of the wine that people seem to be attracted to is the simple, characterless, mass market white wines of Italy. The grape has far more potential than these wines suggest and produces some outstanding age-worthy dry whites in Alsace and a number of late harvest ‘stickies’. Italy itself produces some fine examples from Fruili and Alto-Adige but it can often be hard to pick these out of the sea of mediocre Pinot Grigio’s on your retailer’s shelves.
