Mosel-Saar-Ruwer
T his is arguably Germany’s greatest wine region and is responsible for some of the very best Riesling in the world. The vines are grown on the very steep slopes that line the Mosel River and are dedicated almost exclusively to Riesling.
This marginal climate is at the northernmost limit for ripening grapes and as such vintages are quite important with warmer years generally producing riper grapes and better wine. Wines from the Mittel Mosel tend to be the most consistent in terms of ripeness and quality.
Many Rieslings can be highly acidic and lean when young, but given a number of years in the cellar the wines can transform into some of the best whites you will ever drink – they are that good. Late-harvest sweet wines are also made here and again the quality can be superb.
Prices for the very best wines are staggering but for around £10 you can expect a very good wine with a little bottle age from a decent producer.
