Malbec Malbec is found in small proportions in some Bordeaux wines but was originally made in Cahors and blended with Merlot to soften its harshness. Argentina has taken on this variety and all but claimed it as it it’s own, producing softer, lusher wines with plum, mulberry and blackberry primary flavours. The grapes are quite tough and rustic and the wines can be the same, although the very best examples are amazing. Can also offer fantastic value. Primary fruit character: blackberries and mulberries Secondary flavour character: tar, leather, game Spiritual home: Cahors, South West France Home from home: Mendoza (Argentina), Chile, Australia, California
