What a find this wine was when we first spotted it! US Cabernet is notoriously difficult to get right - many are overdone, out of balance and lacking in structure and acidity. Not to mention they cost a bomb! JustNat is different. A bright, purple wine with ruby red tinges which has a nose full of blackberry and cherry fruit, laced with a touch of chocolate and black tea. This complexity on the nose is mirrored on the palate where the fruit is vibrant and fresh and the tannins are approaching a very pleasant level of silkiness. Furthermore, the wine is finely structured, has good acidity and reminds more of fine Bordeaux than American Cabernet in this respect. The cassis finish is long and lingering.

The Schreyer Cabernet Sauvignon Vineyard was carefully created on approximately 8 acres to celebrate Gary’s two daughters -Justine and Natalie- hence: JustNat. The vineyard is very well located on a moderately steep hillside at the southern end of the Dry Creek Valley near the town of Healdsburg. Three different, yet individually outstanding, French clone Cabernet Sauvignon vines are grown on a vertical trellis system and nurtured by Patin Vineyard Management in accordance with the best viticulture practices and standards. A carefully selected harvest chosen from the total production of each of the three clones of vines is selected and hand picked to create a wine with a memorable mélange of substance, style and flavor.

The growing season in the Dry Creek Valley during 2003 was steady and favorable for producing high quality red wine grapes. Things turned a bit more challenging as we approached maturity: a flock of wild turkeys invaded the vineyard determined to dine on our fruit. We prevailed in the competition and hand picked grapes for JustNat on September 26, 2003. We followed a classic process of crushing and de-stemming, moderately warm fermentation and brief post-fermentation maceration. JustNat 2003 was aged 19 months in new French Oak barrels.
