Chenin Blanc AKA: Steen
This versatile grape produces high acidity dry white wines with layered apple and pear characteristics that develop into candied tropical fruits. Chenin produces some of the longest-lived white wines in the world (Loire Vouvrays) and works extremely well with food. It even makes some very tasty sparkling wine. Much of the wine-producing world now plants it but few with the respect of the Loire winemakers, where it is worshipped. Seldom considered a classic but a really good glass of Chenin should be enough to convince anyone of its potential. One of our favourites. Primary fruit character: apples and pears Secondary fruit character: candied tropical fruits, honey Spiritual home: Loire Valley, France Home from home: South Africa, California, Australia, Argentina, New Zealand
