Carmenere Carmenere plants have a very similar vine structure to Merlot and, like Merlot, started as a Bordeaux variety. Unfortunately, after the Phylloxera outbreak in Europe the variety was never really replanted, becoming the lost variety of Bordeaux . Chile however has really picked up the mantle and now produces the best Carmenere in the world - rich, deep, complex and classically South American. Like Malbec in Argentina, Bordeaux's loss is South America's gain! Primary fruit character: redcurrants, summer fruits Secondary flavour character: game, herbs, spice Spiritual home: Bordeaux, France Home from home: Chile, California
