Carmenere
Carmenere plants have a very similar vine structure to Merlot and, like Merlot, started as a Bordeaux variety. Unfortunately, after the Phylloxera outbreak in Europe the variety was never really replanted, becoming the lost variety of Bordeaux . Chile however has really picked up the mantle and now produces the best Carmenere in the world - rich, deep, complex and classically South American. Like Malbec in Argentina, Bordeaux's loss is South America's gain!
