Carignan
AKA: Carignano, Mazuelo, Carinena

This is the most widely planted grape in France and produces some decent, rustic style reds when care is taken. It is now planted in many wine-producing nations across the world and is often seen as a workhorse, blending grape.  The Spanish do some inteesting things with it and it has the potential to work but it is rather unfashionable and often overlooked.

Primary fruit character: cherries, strawberries, rose petals
Secondary flavour character: licorice, smoke, toast
Spiritual home: Languedoc, Corbieres, Minervois
Home from home: France, Spain, California, South America
