Responsible for many of the world’s greatest wines, Cabernet is hailed, worshipped and respected as arguably the best red wine variety. Thick skinned and late ripening it is a variety that adds structure and stature to wines. Cabernet also makes good sub-£10 wines where its rich, dark fruit is allowed to lead the way. It loves oak and the best examples from Bordeaux and California are simply stunning.

Secondary flavour character: cedar, coffee, vanilla, eucalyptus, smoke, tobacco
Spiritual home: Bordeaux, France
Home from home: California, Napa (USA); Coonawarra, Margaret River (Australia); Chile. Good examples can be found in most of the world’s warmer grape growing regions
