Bonarda
This grape was once widely planted throughout Piedmont, Italy but had fallen out of favour with many growers. Happily it is making a strong comeback, not least because it is now one of Argentina ’s most planted varieties. In Italy this is typically made into light, fruity and easy to drink wine while South America tends to produce fuller, fatter more complex wines (many of which are better than their Italian counterparts). Primary fruit character: red and black berries, plums Secondary flavour character: sweet spice, caramel Spiritual home: Piedmont, Italy Home from home: Mendoza, Argentina
