Airen

This grape is responsible for vast amounts of cheap and often not very good white wine. Widely planted throughout Spain, it is most at home in very centre of the country in La Mancha. The variety is very hardy and drought resistant but has little flavour and can make quite bland wines. However, with careful management, decent, gluggable fruity whites are possible.

Primary fruit character: citrus overtones with some green apple
Secondary fruit character: further citrus concentration and possibly some other yellow and orange fruit character
Spiritual home: La Mancha, Spain
Home from home: not often seen outside of Spain
